Helideck Perimeter Safety Netting Replacement – North Sea Offshore Platform Case Study

Sonomatic RAIS were contracted to undertake the replacement of helideck perimeter safety netting on a North Sea offshore platform.

A specialist three-person rope access team was mobilised to safely remove the existing perimeter netting and install a replacement system, restoring the required protection around the helideck.

The project demonstrates our ability to deliver specialist offshore maintenance activities through compact, experienced teams, supported by established procedures, competency management and the wider technical capabilities of Sonomatic.

The Challenge

The replacement of helideck perimeter netting presented several operational challenges due to the exposed location and restricted access around the outside edge of the helideck.

Working offshore at height required careful planning, controlled access arrangements and specialist rope access techniques to ensure the work could be completed safely and effectively.

The replacement system also needed to be correctly positioned, secured and tensioned in accordance with manufacturer requirements, with consideration given to surrounding structures to minimise potential wear.

Our Solution

Sonomatic RAIS deployed a dedicated three-person rope access team to undertake the replacement activities. Using specialist rope access techniques, the team accessed the exposed helideck perimeter without the need for extensive temporary access systems. The existing netting was removed and replaced with a new perimeter safety netting system, which was carefully installed, aligned and tensioned to the required specification.

A key part of the Sonomatic RAIS delivery philosophy is the use of established core personnel rather than relying heavily on ad-hoc contractors. This approach allows us to maintain greater consistency across our operations, with teams familiar with our working procedures, equipment, competency requirements and expectations for safety and quality.

Project Outcome

The helideck perimeter safety netting replacement was successfully completed, restoring the required protective system around the helideck.

The project demonstrates Sonomatic RAIS’ ability to execute specialist offshore maintenance activities using a compact rope access team and an efficient access methodology.

By prioritising core personnel and maintaining established operational standards, we aim to provide clients with consistency, accountability and confidence in the services we deliver.

OUR DIFFERENCE – CORE PERSONNEL, CONSISTENT DELIVERY

At Sonomatic RAIS, our people are central to how we deliver projects.

We prioritise the deployment of experienced, directly employed core personnel, providing our clients with established teams rather than a delivery model heavily dependent on sourcing ad-hoc personnel for individual projects.

Our focus is not simply on providing personnel to complete an individual work scope, but on delivering a dependable, technically supported service that clients can rely upon.

This offers several important advantages:
  • Consistency of delivery: Established teams operating to familiar standards, processes and expectations.

  • Competency assurance: Personnel supported by structured training, assessment and competency management systems.

  • Accountability: Clear responsibility for safety, workmanship, quality and project delivery.

  • Operational familiarity: Personnel who understand our equipment, procedures and wider capabilities.

  • Integrated delivery: The ability to draw upon wider Sonomatic expertise to support inspection, access and maintenance activities.

MORE THAN ROPE ACCESS

Sonomatic RAIS forms part of the wider Sonomatic group, providing access to an extensive range of inspection, surveying and maintenance capabilities.

By combining these capabilities, we can support clients from initial inspection and defect identification through to access planning and remedial maintenance.

Where appropriate, multiple activities can be coordinated within a single offshore mobilisation, creating opportunities to improve resource utilisation, minimise operational disruption and reduce overall project costs.
